As you've said, normal surfing, no, big wave shit, yes. The stuff they're doin in X-Games now is a joke. I've had a whinge about this before, and most know my feelings about it, so i wont bother ranting again.

yay another surfer. i just wonder how many people who have replied to this thread, have actually surfed. If they did then maybe they might know the feeling of dropping in on a six foot wave and all u can see is jaggered reef thats only 2 foot under the surface. And a six ft wave is considered a small wave. it can still smash u on that reef and if ur lucky u might have some skin left.

Dont knock it till ya try it!

Mungoman45

I'm basing my opinion of it not being extreme, purely on the visual standpoint. Which brings me back to the latest addition of surfing to the X-Games.

I have never surfed, so as you've said, i cannot judge on what it feels like to "drop in" on a wave, or what not, but when you compare the visual of small time surfing, (as you've said, 6ft or so, which is all they have in X-Games), to pretty much any other sport involved:- FMX, BMX vert & dirt, inline street & vert, ... it pales in comparasin.

I'm not disrespecting or ingoring the skill or danger involved in surfing, small wave or big, but to encorporate such a "boring-to-watch" sport in the X-Games is... well... boring.

I've never followed BMX or Inline skate as much as i have FMX, and dont carry the passion for them as i do FMX either, but i can however sit, watch and be amazed at how smooth and skilled the riders/skaters are...which i just cant see in Surfing, it all looks the same. over and over again.

I'd just like to know from someone that DOES surf, or follow the sport, how the hell they can judge it as a sport...alls i can see (as a person that doesn't surf & doesn't follow the sport) is them flicking the board left and right, up and down....which i assume is what you normally have to do to stay up anyways....With any other sport within X-Games, all tricks and moves are clearly defined and able to be scored

Even for a newcomer, who has never witnessed FMX, BMX or even Inline before, they can clearly see the different tricks.

i have surfed...it is fun for a while i have 2 admit but then i starts to get a bit repadative.but thats just my opinion

I do agree in some ways that it can get boring to watch comps. I dont really get into watching comps myself. The only reason i do watch them is, i have a mate that competes. Even air comps get a bit repedative and cause they r only in small waves. But to watch surf vids that show surfing as a free form on the best waves in the world (no comps) thats what i enjoy watching.

Im starting to turn more FMX and MX now cause the beaches r just too crowded here so its hard to stay interested when u have to dodge 150 ppl in one line up. thats not what i call fun!

As far as the comps go, there isnt a massive list of tricks you can do like in FMX, Its got alot to do with wave selection, and who makes the most of their wave. So its not intirely judged on tricks but how smooth you are. Ya can still score high if all you do is get a barrel for 3-4 seconds and come out with one cut back into the lip.

Its a hard one for ppl to understand i guess

all stand up surfing is extreme because i surf in the mornings then go ride for the rest of the day, on low tide day ya get smashed in to the reef and shit and it hurts when ya get hit by other people and your board

hey i reckon surfing is a weird sport, i dont really know whether i would call it extreme or what, but waves are hell scary, being dragged under water by waves that are only about 5 ft is hell scary. big powerful waves would be a hell of alot scarier, and surfers would get absolutely drilled by waves all the time.

compare the number of deaths in surfing to the number of deaths in fmx ya drongo.

yes surfing is extreme. paddle out to any decent sized wave and you will understand. or just an average wave over sharp reef or super-shallow sand banks.
yes comp surfing is generally boring because comp surfing is generally done in locations that are accessible to the public (money makes the world go round). but take the exceptions, such as pipeline/sunset/backdoor in hawaii, tahiti, margaret river etc.

injuries in surfing are not of such a graphic nature as fmx. in fmx you clearly see a rider go down hard, and you watch his body get pounded into the dirt. then you get those lovely x-rays showing their bodies full of metal rods.
in suring you tend to just see the bloke get pounded straight down into the water then he dissapears from view. but under water you can get trapped in crevices and under chunks of reef, you can dragged along razor sharp reef and lose huge amounts of skin and flesh. or you can get hammered straight into the sand/reef and get concussed/knocked out and drown. or you can get held down by a big set and believe me, that is far more terrifying than any bike crash. a crash lasts seconds, a hold-down can last a VERY long time.
and yes theres also sharks as well. sure idiots say you're more likely to get hit by a bus. but hey ****head, look boths ways and that aint gonna happen is it. but you cant see whats lurking under the water, its something completely out of your control.

hmm this turned into a huge post. at the end of the day.. if you have never surfed (and when i say surf i dont mean 2 foot dribble at the local beachy) you just will not understand. ever.

Billabong sums it up best. "Only a surfer knows the feeling"

Surfing is alright, during the summer when it's too hot to ride your motoy. I reckon though it all depends on where you surf. If you surf on a beach break then it's not extreme but when you surf a reef with only 5 foot of water over it and the wave is 8 foot well then i think it's kind of extrem.
MOTORBIKES are way more ********, though

:upyours4: :Z15: normal surfin is borin as to watch but the big wave stuff is pretty awesome. i wouldn't call normal surfing extreme. I can't belive its in x games now. Just turning on a wave isn't extreme, if it was, riden around the backyard on ur moto not doin any jumps would be classed as extreme.

all yous who say its shit you just havent tried it yet its one of the sweetest things to do compared to ridin a bowl to ridin a wave surfin is 10x as fun. about the extreme factor though, its sort of borderline unles the waves are 6 foot. unlees you have surfed over 6ft you cant make a comment here if you have surfed goldy on a good day you will know what its like to be smashed when your at home watching on your lazy ass you get no idea whats its like

im not saying its a crap sport or its no fun its just that its not that fun to watch so how can it be classed as a extreme sport. Big wave surfing is cool to watch though it could be classed as extreme.

Ive surfed my whole life, i was a competitive bodyboarder for like 4 years before i started freestyle full on. The word extreme is so very gay. dont use it. But if the subject has changed to that surfing shouldn't be included in x games, well i believe thats bullshit in my opinion. Ive surfed a lot of scary breaks wordwide, the majority of the heaviest have probably been down my coast in Victoria. Some places no matter how long youve surfed for are just plain scary. I realise that the x games contests are held at huntington i believe? which no isn't know for being heavy. Having said that compare it to say skateboarding in the x games, having a contest at huntington for surfing is like watching vert skating, having a contest at cortes bank is like watching big air skating. you know? You may not break as many bones surfing as skating, and you'll probly not drown or get eaten by a shark skating! both have different dangers. but let me say this a lot of people have died surfing, including proffessionals, in heavy conditions its THE most dangerous sport in the world because put simply you die in 60 ft waves. Surfing deseveres to be in x and it is included in the individual family of sports because of there lifestyle and attitudes aswell as being a very dangerous sport.
cheers.

Mungo, I've surfed all my life in comps and free surfing and nothing apart from floor gymnastics is closer in judging to FMX than surfing.

Consider " The surfer who executes the most radical manouvers, in the most critical parts of the wave for the longest time shall be declared the winner"

This is almost the same as FMX criteria, best use of course, least errors, variation of tricks, extension of tricks, etc

I can watch ten different backhand re-entries and rate them easier than I could ten SSGs, to the trained eye it's easy.

FMX can learn a lot from Pro Surfing in the way that they can score a subjectively judged sport down to two decimal points. FMX judges could learn a heap from a surf judging school.

it looks like every 1 is comparing motobikes to surfing so thats what i am goiong to do...a 80ft table top=80ft jaws...........hitting the deck on a dirtbike=faceplanting into the dry reef at a reefbreak..........flying around a berm=a massive re-entry........a very technical double=a heavy reef break...and so on....the only diffrence is the majority of motobike riders can hit a 80ft tabletop but about 5 guys can surf a 80ft wave which makes the sport extreme

yeah ive always been a bit more into bodyboarding then surfing. I rekon it gives you a bigger adrenilan rush koz when your on your gut the whole way through the wave (unless your DKing) 4 surfer foot feals like about 20 foot. well theres my 2 cents.

Surfin is 1 of those sports that would b fun 2 do but f'n borin 2 watch it's kinda extreme 4 the risk factor but i wouldn't class it n it doesn't deserve the attention it gets n should not b in X games especially wit those 2 foot waves last year. n they all look the same cut back after cut back
