MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Vans, Inc (NASDAQ: VANS): The XBOX Pro of Freestyle Motocross kicked off the 2003 Vans Triple Crown of FMX series as the world's top riders descend upon Minneapolis' Target Center. With the back flip ramp making its first appearance at a Triple Crown, the competition came down to Kenny Bartram and Nate Adams, the only two riders to complete the highly touted trick, Bartram and Adams went toe to toe for the title.
Friday night saw Bartram pull off the back flip as his first trick of the night, setting the tone for the rest of the field. After scoring a 94.7 on the opening run, Bartram secured the number one qualifying spot. Adams was the second place qualifier scoring a 93.9 also pulling off the back flip. Dustin Miller put together huge combos trying to take the judges minds off the back flip and was able to score a 93.3. First time Triple Crown competitor, Myles Richmond qualified fourth as Drake McElroy with the fifth spot. In the finals, Miller took over the XBOX Hot Seat from Matt Buyten only to watch as Adams put together a two-minute run that included a back flip and a no-footed back flip. Adams scored a 93.9 and over took the XBOX Hot Seat from Miller. Matching the two back flips and executing a flawless run was Bartram, scoring a 94.3, enough to take the first win of the weekend.
Saturday night, Bartram and Adams again qualified first and second, respectively. Matt Buyten, Dustin Miller and Andy Jones rounded out the top five qualifiers. Drake McElroy qualified in the sixth spot and sat in the XBOX Hot Seat with a 93.4 until the second place qualifier Nate Adams bumped him out with a score of 93.6. Bartram put together another near perfect run and scored a 94.2 to take the XBOX Pro of Freestyle Motocross and the overall lead in IFMA points standings.
