Motorcycling Australia (MA) has advised Full Throttle Sports (FTS) that no rider is allowed to perform a backflip at any of FTS’ events, including this weekend’s Yamaha Super-X Open Series.

MA faced and overcame enormous obstacles in order to secure public liability insurance for 2003.

The insurance obtained does not cover activities such as backflips. In the interests of the safety of the rider involved in the proposed backflip, and the organisations and individuals indemnified under our policy including the proprietor of FTS, the decision has been made to prohibit the activity.

Although the rider in question has his own insurance and may be prepared to sign a waiver, MA has not had the opportunity to view that policy and seek legal opinion on its contents.

While MA realises the decision will disappoint some people, it was made with the full interests of all involved in motorcycle sport in mind.

It is MA’s role as governing body of the sport to make tough decisions such as these.

Stakeholders in the sport need to understand that insurance is not a ‘given’ or guaranteed in this sport, nor in many other recreational activities.

If an injury or worse had befallen the rider, questions would be directed at MA asking why the backflip was allowed.

Backflips are at this stage prohibited at all MA-permitted events.

To the best of our knowledge, MA is currently the only governing body of motorcycle sport in the world that has been proactive enough to officially permit Freestyle events.

This brings up another question I just thought of.
Soon as the backflip is the newest and best trick so far to enter into the world of FMX and cause so much controversy over it.
Do you think that in the future, whether it be dayz, months or years ahead, there will be an even more radical variation of the backflip, or just another insane trick that everyone judging or with the power, (like MA), even in America, will Ban full stop in competition. Fair enough when it is done, whatever it will be, people will hear about it and film it and it will feature in FMX Vids, but when it comes to competition, it will just simply not be alowed, due to safety reasons.

yea, there will definatly b a better trick than the backflip in the future,, and if so, it will probly be more dangerious,, it sucks that mx done that, maybe all the shit will get sorted or sumthing and they will alow it,, i duno,, wonder about a double flip? haha

Yeah, Damn straight, It's kinda weird, it all started when riders didn't wanna ride by the rules and do what they felt like, hence Freestyle was born. And now, years in the making, Freestyle is getting limited by the governing body of Motocross. The people the riders were trying to get free from in the 1st place.

I guess thats where Insanes thread about AFRA, or AFRO, or FATASS, or STURTOFARTED, or whatever ya want to call it, comes into play.
