Backflip is golden yet again
ASPEN, Colo. – Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall – Mike Metzger proved that he can do it all.
“The Godfather” hit a Backflip and a No-footed Backflip to take Gold in Moto X Big Air at Winter X Games VII Saturday afternoon. Metzger (Menifee, Calif.) also used the Backflip to bring home Gold at last year’s X Games in Philadelphia.
“The jumps all worked perfect,” Metzger said, who has now won Gold in the last three X Games Moto X events (Freestyle and Big Air in August and one Saturday). “You’ve got to know how far you’re going in order to land it.”
Australian Dayne Kinnaird proved that there’s more than just the Backflip as his flurry of combinations helped him to a Silver with a score of 92.00.
“I’ve always been confident that placing is just a matter of landing combos,” Kinnaird said after bringing home his first-ever X Games medal. “I was confident that my combination was enough to earn second, even though I didn’t flip.”
Caleb Wyatt (Medford, Ore.), the first person to ever land the Backflip and ride away on a 250cc, ended up in the Bronze spot in his Winter X Games debut with the flip.
“I had pressure on the last one, going for a No-footer in order to win a medal,” Wyatt said of his day.
Nate Adams (Glendale, Ariz.) hit the Backflip on all three of his runs, but had trouble finding a clean landing on the snow and finished out of the medal standing in fourth. Metal Mulisha frontman Brian Deegan, the defending Winter X Games Gold medallist, pulled out of the competition because of complications from a dislocated
shoulder.
ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC Sports will combine to televise 17 original hours of Winter X Games VII coverage January 30 – February 4, while ESPN International will distribute the Games worldwide. In addition, EXPN.com, the year-round home for action sports and culture, will offer extensive coverage, including streaming video from Winter X Games VII.
