just ride up to it at the right speed, roll up the start then get on the gas a little and "rrrraaaaart" off the lip ... keep your weight neutral, you don't wanna nose dive or backflip. i'm no pro but thats how i approach ramps anyway .....

yeah to get extra height off the lip you should preload your suspension as you're going up the ramp to make you pop a little higher and also to jump into tricks ... but when your just starting you probly should just get the feel of the ramps natural kick first then start worrying about preloading and getting higher in the air

normally...( at least 125, dunno about that 80) hit it in second gear. come up to it, not fast, but keepin it on the pipe, as soon as you enter the ramp gas it, keep in good attack position so you wont endo or loop out in the air.
bra--bra--bra----brrrrrrrrrrraaaaap
( if your just starting out, keep it at short distance and extend it as you get the hang of it)

I hit a full size kicker about three weeks ago... Safest way is to follow someone that's already nailed it so they can act as a speed check for you... If your riding with guys that have different size bikes like 125's and 250's don't listen to them when they tell you what gear to use.. The size of the bike and your weight will make a difference...
As we didn't have anyone that had hit it before it became a game of shortest straw goes first... One of the youngsters on a 125 got the short end of the deal... Hit it first time in third and over jumped by like 15 feet... Second time he nailed it perfectly... I used him as a speed check and I nailed it first go... It's actually really cool once your've done it once... The bike kind of cruises over the lip and then you nail the landing easy... Don't worry about preload until your've nailed it a few times then you can start to play around...
Enjoy..
