well the after f*ckin around for way to long i finnaly have a right angle and and my curves are welded and ground down, so this question is for people who have hit and built ramps, i just want to know how my curve is what do yous reckon? to steep? to mild? i thought its pretty good and should give me a bit a pop?
cheers meesh
ps - my eye is on you snitz for a nice detailed answer LOL.

looks a bit steep to me, it should start rising a bit further back.
i havent built any before though
GStylEr
15th June 2004, 04:31 PM
It's so small! Other than that it looks fine, not too steep, will probly work nice up to about 45, maybe 50 feet... To fix the thing at the bottom, just grind a long angle into the bottom rail so the curve transitions into it, should clean it all up and make it smooth by the looks of it. If ya don't get what I mean just let me know and I'll draw it up or somethin.

looks pretty good to me but maybe a bit to steep!!!
meesh
15th June 2004, 05:36 PM
yeh gstyler i was thinkin that, its not that small man, that dude is pretty tall hey, its 5.5foot high and 13 foot long its only a foot and a half smaller(in height) than a aus comp i'm pretty sure. thanks for the tips keep em comin heh heh.

LOL!! Thanks for the heads up meesh ;)
Well mate, to be honest, I reckon you've nailed that ramp! Granted, the middle looks a little poppy, but you've evened it out with keeping the tip of it a little flatter. So pretty much you'll be riding up it, get the very first sudden shock of the curve, but then it will hopefully flatten the bike out enough to keep the bike floating in a good position. But as Grant said, that ramp is good for about 45foot max, and it's not going to be a high 45 foot either, probably want a downramp about 2.5 Metres high, any higher and you'll probably be axing yourself on the top of it, trying to scrape over.
If that ramp was full size It'd be perfect, because there'd be enough length in the actual ramp for the suspension to adjust to the differing transitions in the ramp. (remember this is only my opinion, i'm not expert by any means)
So my only improvement for that ramp, is let the transition begin earlier, I notice the bottom of the ramp is flat for about a foot, if you can raise it off the ground, and begin the process of the transition of the ramp as soon as you leave the ground, the better it will be. My philosophy is that the ground is flat for as long as your runup is, why not utilise every inch of your ramp to make the bike go in the air, so rather than keep the first foot of your metal flat with the ground, just raise it up gently, this will take out the steepness of the middle of the ramp, and will give you an almost constant radius. You don't have to do much, just a fraction and it'll come up roses I feel.
The very most, if you're allowed too, I'd add an extra 6 inches onto the height ;)That will help ALOT to that design, you've got overhang of the transition piece, and there's more if you raise the bottom of it :) Just a thought, if you can weld a filler piece of metal in to give it more height, I'd recommend it.
Actually I'll try work my photoshop skills (NONE) to draw a line where the start should be to even out the middle :)
Also, would you actually change the ramp? lol, cos most people would be too lazy to do it anyway haha, just keep working on it.
GStylEr
15th June 2004, 05:58 PM
Yeah, doin what I said, would probably do what Steve said... If ya cut the curve into the bottom rail it'd stop it being so flat, fix the curve up, and make it smoother to the ground. I'll go draw a pic up now cause I'm bored that way you can see what I mean.
The Snitz
15th June 2004, 06:08 PM
HAHA I told you I was crap at Photoshop. Anyway, this is enough to show you what I mean. It's exactly what Grant is thinking I dare say, hopefully his picture looks better.
Now as you can see by this pic I've done, I've taken that flat bit out of the bottom, and mellowed out the middle to give you an even transition. Because of this, you'll have about 4 inches of overhang as a wild guess. And we all know what that 4 inches of overhang means... 4 inches that could be put into making the ramp just a fraction higher and making the transition sit flush with the Steel that is vertical. :D
Anyway, thats all I think you need, but what you have made is most definetly ride-able, I'm not taking that way from you, you've done a very good job indeed, just to utilise each inch of that ramp, I'd personally just take raise that flat bit and you will be loving it!!
Can't wait to see this thing getting off the ground, no wait... YOU off the ground ;)
Steve :afro:
GStylEr
15th June 2004, 06:52 PM
Hmmm, interesting. I now see what you were gettin at Steve, raising the whole thing... Slightly different to what I was meaning, my pic is also a disgrace, damn photoshop gotta make simple things hard... But yeah this hopefully shows what I meant. Very same effect I dare say, but whereas you keep the length of the overall ramp the same and slightly decrease the angle by the looks of it, I kept the angle the same and chopped some length off the bottom rail. I think. Have a look anyway.
meesh
15th June 2004, 11:04 PM
CHEERS GUYS!! that does help alot!! so what your sayin steve is weld another little bit of metal on top of the upright, to make it like 5.9 instead of 5.5?. i think i will do that, i spose theres a few ways i could do it, but if i add a bit on i'll probably be thankin you's later, yeh the whole point of that ramp was for a learner ramp i guess, but i mean i thought mine was pretty big compared to say mungo's mini, or some of those bloody bodged up wooden ones LOL anyway i'll have a look at it tommorow and i'll put up some more pics up as i go along thanks again boys.
ps: i hope to be off the ground sometime soon to snitz heh heh
The Snitz
16th June 2004, 12:55 AM
HAHA Yes Meesh it is better than those bodged up wooden ones! thank god ur going metal :D. Yeah I reckon if you just raise it a fraction, you'll have a bit of extra transition at your disposal, just raise it a fraction to even it out perfectly and hopefully I'll be recieving flowers in the mail HAHA. (roses are my favourite HAHA j/k mate)
Yeah keep us updated ay mate :)
meesh
16th June 2004, 03:24 PM
well today i was havin a look at it and workin sh*t out, and what i did is i pulled the whole curve up more so theres a massive over hang at the top which brought the flat bit to a transition, i havent welded any more height on to it as yet, tommorow i'll post up some pics of how it looks with the curve pulled up.
geez man roses are pretty expensive,, but i guess ya cant put a price on that sort of knowledge lol. oh yeh if you have a look at that picture, its pulled up to the first weld on the ramp, it looked like almost the same angle just with more of a transition down the bottom.
The Snitz
16th June 2004, 03:52 PM
Ah well, now that you know you have that Overhang, you can see how much you can lift the height. Just Grind the weld and hold it up to give you an idea. You probably won't need to actually do any specific bends, just push it up higher and it should still retain a better radius of the transition. Ah well I guess we'll see when you take some pics :)
Yep, Roses are expensive, but I have expensives tastes.. what can i say haha.
meesh
17th June 2004, 04:21 PM
alrighty!! i have a bit more transition now, if you look hard you can see i grinded the bottom rail aswell, and i pulled the whole thing forward hence the huge overhang at the top anyway what do yous think now?? :p

Mate I'm very impressed to say the least! Now the question has to be asked, what is your "Budget" for this ramp? Cos you have yourself about 3/4 Full Size Ramp there! You can leave what you have there, that's perfect. Then Simply add another longer vertical support and give it an extra foot or so on the ground to make a Right-Angle and you have already 2 Supports done. That's perfect mate I'm very impressed!
Or to make it look good, ditch that upright that you have already (As I can see you have it on a slant, use it for the middle pieces to join the 2 sides later, and just cut a longer length for the end vertical piece and then work out the rest of the supports from there.
You probably have your designs and they're more accurate than mine, but I just thought I'd throw up my vision of it for you. Anyway, Good work mate, I can't wait to see you riding this thing!!
meesh
17th June 2004, 05:46 PM
swoit man, yes well the budget is pretty well spent lol, but holy bageebuz i dont know but looks like it might be a to much of a voilent angle for the length of that ramp but i'm not sure(cheers for the diagram), yeh that upright is on a mild slant due to me not tacking it on properly but i figured it will pull into line when i weld it all together, anyway i'm glad i've got that bloody angle sorted out and i've got the go ahead from the snitz heh heh now i can get onto other thing like puttin in more supports and joinin both side together YAY!! anyway i'll post more pics soon.
The Snitz
17th June 2004, 06:50 PM
Ahaha, Clearance to continue is Granted :p haha. If you were to stick with the original design, just cut off the overhang plush and use it as the supports for the very bottom, try and make use of every single bit of Steel. As a medium sized ramp that you were going for in the first place, it is now ready to go, and as a 3/4 size It is also ready to go, whatever you can afford to do I suppose :D

not much of an update but finnally welded one of the curves onto the right angle, thus this is the final angle and i put both of em together and they match up beautifully, as you can see i didnt have to get me classmates to hold it into place this time yippy ky yay motherf*cker lol.
check out me beastie stick welder in the background bbbbbzzzzzzzz:D stay tuned more is on its way i might go up and take a few pics of what i intend on usin as a downramp, its just a bit grassy at the moment and i'm waitin the metho, turps and weed killer to soak in.

nah today was MY last day, i have thought about that, but it wouldnt happen AS no teachers are willing to give up thier time to be in the same block which they need to be again cause of shitty liabilty and what not, and tommorow its practice for the QCS so i'm flaggin school as i'm not going to be sitting that exam.

meesh
19th July 2004, 05:01 PM
nah not really it wasnt to hard, there was a fair bit of screwin around - marking out, cutting, bending, welding, then maken em both the exact same, but i used the metal bending guide for the rev1, check out www.fmxramps.com and go to rev1 you'll find the guide that will tell you everything you need to know.

with that cut thing how didu gett the ramp sdes thhe exact same shape and size
meesh
29th July 2004, 05:17 PM
i'n not sure if your talkin about the curve and or the way i cut it in half, but i'll explain the curve, i just layed down the steel, marked all the measurement on both at the SAME time and cut em both at the SAME time then bent em, if they arent exact they should be bloody well close to exact if you've cut it all the same, then i welded the cuts they didnt match up perfectly when i welded mine so i had to cut and bend one a bit more to match the other one, when i chopped it in half i attacked it with a cutting blade on the grinder.

cheers guys. i havent joined the two sides together yet, but when i do it'll be a bout 3ft wide, and its about 5.7ft high and about 13.5ft long.
GStylEr
3rd August 2004, 12:32 AM
Why 3ft mate? Just wondering, but it'd be easier to go 4ft wide, which is 1.2m, since that's the standard width of sheets of ply and checkerplate and pretty much any surface. It'll just be less work cause you won't have to trim the surface off or anything. That's my thoughts anyways. What are ya putting on the surface by the way?
unhallowed
3rd August 2004, 05:13 AM
dude, not to ruin your fun and stuff. but in the long run. plywood sucks for a ramp. even if its only for the top layer. it will start to mold away if its left out in the weather. and one day ( if you dont check it for cracks and molds ect.) your front wheel is gonna punch through it. it would be safer to put a layer of checkerplate or aluminum sheets. i know its more expensive and money is probably tight right now. ( thats why i havent built my own ramp yet.) but in the long run its worth it. i wouldnt take a short cut on safty.
but your ramp is looking mighty sick, and im mad jealous.
cheers.

and unhallowed i realise that aye but i wont be leavin it out in the weather, i was thinkin checker plate but apprently its a prick to weld with a stick welder:confused: , i dont aye i might go checkerplate but i'd imagine to cover my ramp itd be double what it would be for ply - correct me if i'm wrong, anyway if get ply it will be marine ply and coated (like a moist snatch):p with weatherproof paint and the likes. cheers for the suggesttions mate.

hahahaha dont worry steve, notice how i said 4 sheets, they are gonna be glued together to make 2 sheets, I thought it would be easier to bend em that way, so it will be like 20mm thick in the end:p , I was also wondering about painting the frame, do i need a primer before i paint galvy? or can i just slap on the black?:p , AND WHATS A GOOD SAND TO USE? hey meesh, i've been on www.fmxramps.com about the free rev 1 plans, i've wanted to build it for a while. and now that i can. i was really wondering on how to bend the metal, i was thinking get my 8 foot peice and my 20 foot bottom peice. then tac the straight peice on there so it looks like a huge triangle and then just weld in the supports and force it down to them and tac them in and weld them and see what type of bend i get.. but i didnt know if that would work. and i would like to try their method. but i dont get what they were saying. can you explain it. or post up a picture of it.. i would really appriciate it.
cheers.
( by the way. i hate you. im so jealous of your ramp. i want to fly to aussie and kick you. then take it, but i dont think it counts as carry on luggage..)

PAINT!:p, also put some ply on the top half. Still wonderin what a good sand for grip is........anyone?
The Snitz
13th September 2004, 03:46 PM
Swish :) looking good mate
Sand.... Ummm any sand? lol it won't matter too much. Personally I'd recommend you go to you're nearest Wattyl dealer and buy this Tar compound called Perm-A-Tar. It is a 2 can thing where you have a 3 litre can of Tar and a 1 litre can of thinner, mix it together to make the tar runny, then paint the ply with it and it'll dry hard. Best thing to waterproof the ramp and it sticks well to the tire when you ride up it, like tar on the road ;)
meesh
13th September 2004, 05:29 PM
cheers steve, yeh I was thinkin about that tar stuff, I remeber reading it in a thread somewhere when I first joined this forum, i'll probably just use some sorta large grainy sand mixed with the rest of my thick oily sludge black paint lol, bloody wattle they aint cheap lol.
meesh
14th September 2004, 03:09 PM
WOOD!!;) , soon my friends,..........soon.....:p

14th September 2004, 03:13 PM
man u must be spendin a fortune! how much have u forked out so far??
meesh
14th September 2004, 03:22 PM
about $600 and thats about all that needs to be done, dont forget I got very expensive steel acording to brad that is, still it was damn expensive($460 for 48 meters, my ply only cost me $70 which was sweet. COLD GAL and paint = $50, bolts and nuts were about $20.
ps - don't forget the government is shoutin me this one;) .
4syth
14th September 2004, 03:38 PM
coming along great bro, what steel tubing are you using?
deev8
14th September 2004, 03:58 PM
government? why is that?... and yes, if you have already said why in this thread then i must have just missed it cos i have read the whole thing...
meesh
14th September 2004, 09:09 PM
cheers boys, nah I haven't said why yet haha, Basically because my student allowance pays for stuff for school, stuff like school fees, guitar strings, educational excursions and FMX ramps haha. I used 40x40x3 galvy as my steel.
The Snitz
14th September 2004, 09:38 PM
WOOT!!! Looking good Man!! :D
Bet you were stoked when you first put those pieces of ply on!
Looks good mate, how much to go? Bolt it on and give it a couple of coats of paint, then good as gold?
meesh
14th September 2004, 11:09 PM
Heh heh, spot on mate, something about puttin the ply on a ramp that gives ya that little feeling lol, yeh the top half is bolted on and the bottom has a few bolts, just need to put a few more on, the clamps are still on because I'm waiting for the liquid nails to dry. After that paint and sand, and she be done, pity my bike needs a rebuild already, can't believe how many times i've rebuilt my bike, it's a bummer, can't wait for that 250 to come my way lol.
edit - Forgot to mention that I have to weld on one more bar to the bottom for support for the ply:( , another lesson learnt.
The Snitz
14th September 2004, 11:13 PM
Sweet :)
Yeah, Callum (Stavross) and I were discussing the sound of your bike in that video from the other day thinknig it didnt' sound right lol, thats why ay :p
Ah well 250 soon and a new ramp, can't complain with that :D
meesh
15th September 2004, 10:07 AM
nope, can't complain at all aye, I just gotta get the funds and then trade her in, My bike has just gone from being snappy and reponsive as, to being a gutless peice of horse poo lol
, but it's always sounded deeper and sort of thicker compared to a lot of other 125's i've ridden with, hopefully my rebuild will be under warranty, and it comes back as snappy as one of them sexual leather type peoples whips LOL.
