View Full Version : My Killer Ramp

Well I had a busy weekend knocking up a ramp. Got it finished today and took it for a test run.
Its 5m long and 2.4m high. The curve section is 3.2m long with a radius of 4m.
The fist straight section was 1m long and the final straight section at the top is 1.7m.
The curve section was made from 100X50X4mm steel.
The rest was 50X50mm & 25X25mm square tube.
I used 1 section of 7m curve and cut this in half so as to cut down on the cost. It normally costs $250 to bend this lenght but I got it cheap for $100 as I'm a good customer.
All up cost about $400.
I went off it first and went straight up then straight down and fell off. Have a video of Chris going off it and and will post it soon.

Here's the video of the ramp. Both files are of the same thing. Dial up one is low quality.

Video - Dial up .5Mb (http://www.tocalexstudents.org.au/Quadkiller/Videos/Jump-2003.wmv)

Video - Broadband 4.2Mb (http://www.tocalexstudents.org.au/Quadkiller/Videos/Jump-2-2003.wmv)

Took about 7 hours to build, I found that because It was such a sharp curve that I couldn't hit it as hard as I would like. It also tended to shoot you straight up and you wouldn't get any distance.
I cut off 2 meters of the curve section at the top and added a 3 metre straight section. This was no good either as you still hit it hard but the bike wanted to take off before the end of the ramp. I was also having some trouble getting my balance right and was always landing on the back wheel.
The third modifaction was removing 2 meters of the straight section at the top and adding a .5 meter curve.
She is starting to look a bit of a mess but I post another pic later when I'm finished.

geez,so ya cut some bits off,and added as few others?
i sorta get ya,do you reokn it woulda been better gettin a aussie comp..like buyin one??

speak english you ****! The hole idea is so he can say he built it and now he gets to ride it! Its better to see the end result of your own built ramp rather than go buy 1!

wow man that looks awefully steep ....

wen i saw that all i wonted to know was

GOT FLIP?

the 2 photos look create a optical ilusion, the first one lookks sic as, but a bit to steep, and the second one looks like its got the curve of the ramp in teh first metre, then the rest is flat.........

at the bottom where it goes from falt to curve is wayyyyyy to steep, so ur shocks are gonna compress, then uncompress goin up and compress at teh end but not as much cos u will run out of time, so its bumpy, and wll be hard to trick off and very dangeorus!!

Yep he is right, try next time making a CONSTANT radius, which ALL the top class ramp's have (ie: FMXramps.com ramps, Freeride Technology Ramps, Freestyle Industries ramps, and the stadard Aussie comp ramp)

In the vid he certainly hits it hard!

You see you could be original and think up your own calls. Other than taking that one off DV from FreestyleMTX.com

thats wrong man ... none of rick distlers ramps (fmxramps.com) have a constant radius and his ramps are widely used in US comps and demos. Heaps of other companies dont use constant radius' either, you'll find that lots of them have a straight bit at the top or bottom (like quadkillers here but a bigger radius on the curved section.)

Just downloaded ya clip and had a little look see, and well it's like no other ramp i have seen, but by the looks it does the job for ya. Whats the gap set at there. It certianly throws ya high.

yes i am aware of that, but i think a constant radius is something differet i'll explain later when i can type my wrist is ****ed up, sry.

radius = distance from origin of circle to circumference of circle.

for a ramp to have constant radius the whole curve has to be an arc taken from a circle of the given radius (i.e. 9.1m for an aussie comp) ... if it has any straight sections or sections that curve more steeply than other sections then it's not a constant radius.

(not being smart or arguing... that's just my logical explanation for radii on ramps)
