iPhone/mobile/PDA access to FmxAus...

Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone will use a iphone/mobile version of the site? We tried a few years back with a mobile site but I think I jumped the gun and about 2 people ever used it besides me...

After a few late nights I have made and added a basic iPhone/mobile/PDA style and the site should now also detect if your on a mobile device and send you to the right style.

The site is stripped right out so it's tiny and won't use much bandwidth. Its flies when on wi-fi and when I am not, it uses almost none of my 3g bandwidth.. I've thrashed it and used only 1% of my GB allowance... Right now I am sitting at Macca's on my iPhone posting this, which I think is pretty cool, also yer thanks for the free wi-fi maccas lol mmmmm big macs droooool....

Remember though, It is a work in progress as I have only done the main forums but need some feedback from iPhone/iPod/PDA/mobile users and if I should even waste more time building it up more.. I don't wanna waste hours and hours if only 2 people will use it...

Anyway, Its up and running and you should be able to login, post and reply and I am slowly adding more functions.. I have inline video like youtube working but am yet to work out how to upload images direct from a iPhone but I am trying to figure out if its possible. I also have some more "make it look nice" work to do but now its kinda working lol

Remember to go to the forums though as I haven't got main page sorted yet and I have only tested it with iPhone so if you get on with another mobile, pda or device, please please let me know and if works ok..

Is it all working ok? I know I gotta make it look pretty but yer.. Also if you find any screens with errors or missing the nav bar up the top, could you post the link... Tis just sometimes being a admin, I see different screens to "normal" users and dont always see the errors...

yeah i've got the same problem, i get the normal site in explorer but not in firefox.
and i must say, mobile version is looking pretty sweet, and it works fine on my mobile.

Sorry all it should now work out who is on a mobile version of firefox, safari and opera ect and who isn't... Please let me know if you're not on a mobile device and still seeing the white style...

It should be all white and not much in the way of graphics.. If your on iPhone it should send you there automaticly...

Sorry bout that, I had major issue with trying to let iphones/safari in and keep people on macs on the main style... Glad its working for you and should now be working for most devices... Now I gotta get it looking nicer, displaying correctly on everyones phone and then I will start to add more functions.. Its pretty hard though trying to emulate 1000 different devices, browers and screen sizes... I think I mighta got most right now... fingers crossed... :)

If someone is on a different mobile device and still seeing the "normal" site, can you goto the link posted above and post the results in this thread.. I will then try make your phone/device work correctly...

Hey Adam. I got my new iPhone. The PDA view works on me. But the only problem is I prefer the normal style and when I click it, it just seems to refresh the page I'm on.

ummm I am in a catch 22 with mobile devices, at the moment it will detect you're on a mobile device and send you to the mobile style. The reason for the mobile style is not only ease of use but so save users having to use a heap of bandwidth to see the site. Not a problem when on wifi but on 3g would end up sucking up the $$$... I want it to be as small and fast as possible...

The problem is if you want to go back to the normal style, it again detects your mobile and sends you back to the mobile style.. I am trying to workout a better way of doing it, I am trying to make a popup asking if you want the mobile or normal style but its alot harder than it sounds...

mobile.fmxaustralia.com should also now work, redirecting you to the forums... I am also working on making it all look better and adding more functions.. Once it's all done then I am gonna have a crack at making it some of into a app and submitting to apple ;)

haha fmxaus app sounds awesome! I got a pretty decent date cap and i've never gone over it before. So i was going to keep viewing in normal? The PDA version i s nice and quick though. I just prefer to see what topic got posted in last and who by from the forum index. also like to see people avatars.

This is so so much more of a headache than I thought. I played around again last night for a few hours and if ppl arent happy with being forced to view the mobile style from mobile devices then yer I think the best way for me to do it from the users point of view is if I have make a complete seperate site for mobiles. Ie: mobile.fmxaustralia.com would take you to a completly recoded seperate mobile site (by seperate I mean has its on set of script/code to interact with the FmxAus database) while the normal URL would take you to the errr normal site.. Lots of work and if I decide its worth it and people will use it, then it will be atleast a fortnight/month till I can get a seperate site all coded and online...

The reason it prolly the best way is because if I detect mobile devices and send you to the mobile style you are effectivly trapped and cant get back to the main site.

I tried a popup last night which detected iphone and asked which style you want however that means the style is hard coded and next time you logged in from your PC it would remember that you/your account where last on the mobile style and force your pc to that style. Not good and its kinda a catch 22...

Its also alot harder if I do the popup thing as I need to hardcode 1000 different mobile devices and browsers into the code so I can detect them and offer the choice... The way I have it set up at the moment with the auto detection and force style is through the control panel which from my end is alot lot easier.....

I am still brain storming and researching other better ways of doing it... If your on the site with a mobile and things start changing or breaking, its just me playing and testing...
