G'Day Guys & Gals

This may sound strange, how do you know how fast to hit a jump to make it to the other side?

Is it just guess work or is their some form of maths involved?

Any help would be appreciated..

after awhile it will come natural and you will know how fast to hit jumps. just start off hittin it at one speed n keep goin faster and faster every time til you get it.

after that yeh every jump will come natural

Nah just a bit of trial and error mate......

Just remember to start small and work your way up mate....

If someone else has jumped it before then get a speed check off them...

I dunno but when u look at a jump u seem to be able to tell how quick to hit it..???

Cheers guys, thats kinda a downer, i dont trust myself LOL,,,,, i think what i need is to meet up with some experianced dudes on a ride and see it first hand...

Ive been doin some small jumps off a dam wall, realy nothin worthy of a thumbs up but ill get thr...

Haha yeh there is a way to do it, we are doing it now in year 12 maths c (hardest maths) at the moment. It's pretty simple, just use verticle and horizontal velocities, displacments, accelerationss etc. But you need to now specifics and have no variables (such as wind resitance etc). But yeah the only real way to now how fast to hit jumps is trial and error bro. Have fun with it

but not only do you have vertical and horizontal velocities, displacements and accelerations you also have spring rates on you suspensions and how they react under different stresses and forces. now this isn't a constant it increases exponentially through speed , weight of rider and transition of ramps.
i am sure maddo's math guys have it pretty dialled by now though lol.
for the rest of us though its a matter of listening to your bike and feeling it. like the guys said, find someone to watch and listen to. failing that puch a ramp up as close as you can get it and just idle over the thing.

Usually I ride by a couple times and try to picture how far I'd go at that speed, and I'll look at it from the side and kinda imagine someone pro hittin it haha and try to do it at that speed. If the ramp is in fairly close you shouldn't get hurt all that bad even if you're a bit off

People it's physics not math.. There is some math involved but it's the theory of projectile motion we are talking about.. In it's simplest form it's m X v X angle of trogectory.. More detail below. You will have to play with the numbers a bit to get a feel for v (velocity or speed). This covers a straight trojectory.. Once we factor in things like radius of ramps, springs, wind resistance etc it gets really heavy..


The vertical component of Newton's second law states:
-mg=m\frac{d^{2}y}{dt^{2}}
where y(t) is the vertical position at time t.
Hence, we have:
y(t)=0+V_{0,y}t-\frac{gt^{2}}{2}
where V_{0,y} is the initial velocity in the vertical direction.
(Since you've been given initial speed, and the angle of the ramp, you may deduce from this V_{0,y})
From this expression for y(t), you may find the t value T not equal to zero so that
y(T) =0

See easy... And no kiddies I won't be doing anyones home work for them..

hahaha Stu, wikipedia has everything these days :D hehe

at the end of the day mate, get onto motocross tracks, or tracks in the bush, anywhere. There'll be varying sized jumps and just stick to tabletops for now. It doesn't matter where you land and you'll get your confidence up and work out how fast you may need to go to land on the other side. I see you're from Noosa, well it'll be worth the time and effort to either go to Manar Park or better yet, go to Black Duck Valley and do some riding on the tracks.
Also, another tip is to go and grab the new FRMX - Ultimage Guide to Freestyle book that is due out in bookstores November 5.. it has all the tips you need to get started jumping etc.
(I also hear the guy who wrote the book is a dreamboat too)
