Free Event Returns to Aspen/Snowmass January 30 – February 2, 2003

Aspen, Colorado - Excitement around Aspen/Snowmass is building, as the one-month countdown to ESPN’s Winter X Games VII begins today. From January 30-February 2, 2003, more than 250 of the world's best action sports athletes will compete in four sports for medals and more than $500,000 in prize money.

The free-to-the-public event enjoyed a successful first year in Aspen as it drew a crowd of close to 40,000 spectators to the four-day event. This year, all events will once again be held at Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain.

Just in case attending the premier winter action sports competition is not enough reason, following are 15 more reasons for families and fans not to miss out on the excitement:

1. Save your money for entry: The event is free to the public!

2. Go Inside: Get the latest on athletes, qualifying competitions and more at www.expn.com.

3. Appear on ESPN: Look for yourself on television as the event airs on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC Sports from January 30 – February 4.

4. Get Interactive: Pick up free giveaways and enter contests at the Winter X Games sponsor’s booths in the Xperience.

5. Aah Inspiring: Watch the world's greatest action sports athletes perform high-flying and technical tricks that make hard-core fans and first-timers "Ooh" and "Aah" in amazement. Be sure not to miss U.S. Olympic Snowboard Halfpipe medallists: Ross Powers (gold), Danny Kass (silver), J.J. Thomas (bronze), and Kelly Clark (gold). A host of other international Olympians are also scheduled to compete.

6. Roll On: After not competing last year due to his Olympic training commitment, skier Jonny Moseley returns to Winter X Games and looks to blow away the "dinner roll" (his signature trick) with a new list of tricks he will execute in Ski SuperPipe.

7. Star Gazing: See which Hollywood and music industry stars stop by. In the past, X Games events have drawn celebrities including Pink, Danny DeVito, Eminem and more.

8. Rocking the House: Catch stellar local musical performances and a DJ spinning music every evening Thursday, January 30 through Sunday, February 2 at an après ski party from 4-6 p.m. in Bumps Lounge at the base of Buttermilk.

9. It's a Small World: Athletes from more than 12 countries around the world are expected to compete.

10. Backflips: See which Moto X superstar will be the first to land a backflip on snow. At X Games VIII in Philadelphia this past August, two athletes pulled the backflip during Moto X Big Air. The trick has never been attempted on snow.

11. Take on the Night at Aspen/Snowmass: Famous for its history, diverse terrain, restaurants and nightlife, Aspen/Snowmass is one of the most well-known resort destinations in the world. Four mountains – Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk – offer a combined 4,803 acres of terrain – three terrain parks, two halfpipes and more than 300 marked trails – via 39 lifts.

12. X Games Gear: Be sure not to leave without getting official XG merchandise from the event.

13. The Host: Between events, try to spot X Games Host Sal Masekela on the venue. After hosting X Games events since 1999, he is now known as the leading voice of action sports. Masekela is also an NBA sideline reporter on ESPN.

14. Hometown Heroes: Cheer on your favorite Aspen local athlete as they compete for X Games glory. Watch for: Snowmass Village’s Gretchen Bleiler (Snowboard SuperPipe) and Basalt’s Jason Smith (Snowboarder X).

15. Free (yes, again): Where else can you bring the whole family to a world-class resort to watch adrenaline-filled competitions, featuring the world’s best athletes – for free? And everyone that comes gets plenty of free goodies.
