Hey.
Me an dad r makin a mini ramp for me jst to stuff around on an for a bit of fun. also so ppl hu havnt hit a ramp can learn on it first. Its only gonna b 1.2 metres high an 3 metres long. U guys reacon it will work???? an how high do u reacon i could get off it????
(an dont laugh at me, i no its small, "mini")

I wont laugh, cause my mini ramp is pretty much the same, only, if ya can believe it, it's smaller than that. it's 1.2 meters high, and only 2meters long, no idea on the curve, i just guestimated that, it boots ya pretty hard. I would never have mine set at a gap any bigger than 30ft. It doesn't have any smoothness to it at all for the bigger bikes, it's just like hittin a spring, BAM ya up. So in short, yes, it will work, and bein longer than mine, it should give ya a lil more smoothness to the overall feeling ya get when ya hit it. Mine is reinforced for the bigger bikes (125/250), but after hittin it, it's obvious something that small would suite BMX and fifty's a lot better. Good luck with it

Mungoman45
11th April 2004, 10:44 PM
Yeah, not any tricks but, 30ft was a lil too small for me. this is a pic of me with it set at 30ft.

11th April 2004, 11:06 PM
that looks a bit steep, i would go for 3 metres long.
hey brad have u got any plans for that little ramp, i think i might make one.
Mungoman45
11th April 2004, 11:12 PM
Na, i dont have any made up plans for it, but ya can work it out:
120cm high
120cm wide
200cm long
just whack in supports wherever ya want, mines got a lil more than usual underneath, just for the pure fact it's bein used with 125's and 250's, needs the reinforcment, if it's only used by BMX or fitty's, it wouldn't need all the shit underneath in the middle.

hey brad, which tool do u use in photoshop to make straight lines ?
[TOPGEAR]
12th April 2004, 12:55 PM
dont worry i found it.
but i been trying for ages to make some plans and i suck at it.
if u get time do u think u could make some more plans of your mini ramp, but have it 300cm long instead of 200, and have the rise not as steep ??
Mungoman45
12th April 2004, 06:57 PM
lol Photoshop is useless for ramp plans, if ya doin em properly. as in "to scale". And yeah, i might be able to do up a basic shell design for those measurements if i have the time. :)

Dont have the time or the motivation to do a complete plan, but here's the four one one:
* Base Steel Length: 318cm (Transition extends behond base to make a total length of 300cm + 50cm rear triangle section =Total length of 350cm)
* Upright Height Length: 112cm (4cm of base + 4cm of
* transition = 120cm total height)
* Width Steel: 112cm (4cm of each side length = 120cm total width)
Each upright support is set with a gap of 50cm.
These are just very close measurements taken from the longest part of each bit of steel, angles and such are not taken into concideration, so you'll need atleast a 5cm breathing length on each piece.

Mungoman45
12th April 2004, 10:49 PM
Are you using this for Moto or BMX? cause i wouldn't even look at that thing twice for hittin it up on a moto. When will people learn NOT to use wood for upramps. people WILL get hurt.
twothreesix
12th April 2004, 10:51 PM
Wat. Woods sweet as. all my ramps r wood. my mates gotta F**kin blast ramp thats straight the hole way up. no curve at all made of the shittist wood around. he didnt even plan it. He made it as he went. Its 1 metre high an 3 long an that old things held up for years! Do u even hav a wood ramp?. its fine. Ill show u sum pics tomorrow an i prove that wood holds up if u do it right!
Mungoman45
12th April 2004, 11:00 PM
I dont have a wood ramp, because i have more sence. I know you say "oh they're good, and it's lasted bla bla." but it's just commen sence, which you wont learn until someone does get hurt. I've been over this so many times before, that i wont bother debating about it again, no matter what i say, your not gunna make yourself a proper one. No matter how poor you are, you shouldn't skimp on ramps, especially in a sport as dangerous as this. If you dont have the money to do it properly, dont do it, simple.

13th April 2004, 10:59 AM
Na, jst because u got tha money to make a flashy metal ramp, Anit meen im gonna b sidelined because i cant offord a "real" ramp. dont get me wrong, I would much prefer a metal ramp, but i jst dont hav the cash. FMX is a great sport an im not gonna stop because my "crappy, shitty wood ramp" isnt up 2 ur standards.
If i get hurt, i get hurt an thats al there is to it. But im preety sure that this thing is gonna hold up so im gonna go an hav sum fun. An ill post sum pics wen i get bak. L8a.

13th April 2004, 11:08 AM
sorry bout the size
Mungoman45
13th April 2004, 07:00 PM
I took care of the size :). By all means, it's your bike, your ramp, your life, and i have no say in what you do, but may i just point out a few lil statments that worry me:
1) "My Standards".....I never base any comment on "my" standards, it's just a safety and commen sence issue is all. Everybody's standards are different with everything in life, but when it comes to such a dangerous sport as FMX, ya gotta have some sort of decent standards, and I'm pretty sure wood upramps, by "most" people's standards will not come up to scratch no matter how well they're built.
2) "I'm pretty sure".....if there's one thing in FMX you should be able to RELY on, and not be "pretty sure" about, it's the ramp. It's no secret, metal is stronger than wood.
3) "It'll Hold up"....Ramps should not just "hold up" they should be realiable to hit time after time without worry.
ok, I'm done, not preachin or anything, just wanted to bring to your attention and make you aware of those points.

yeh i reckon that to with the exeception of those ramps on www.fmxschool.com they look pretty sweet to much material to make it though.

when you make ramps what sort of ply do ya use cose wont the rain and stuff make it weak?
The Snitz
30th April 2004, 02:30 PM
If you have a look around the Ramps Thread you'd probably find information on it there, but since I'm nice I'll let ya know here again..
Thick ply... 17mm to 21mm at least. Just the normal stuff but make sure u paint it and waterproof it. For this I used "Perm-a-Tar". It is a 2pack style paint stuff, it's actually a big can of Tar and a smaller can of Thinner. It equals out to be Thinner is a third of the Tar... Mix it all together and paint it on with a paintbrush (Preferably an old paintbrush that you would throw away).
Other people use Marine ply which has already got the surfaces waterproofed, just make sure that the sides of the ply are painted so moisture doesn't get in the sides.
