I found this on fmtx.

how to: Poorman's excels
The 'how to' for the poor man's excels

I got the idea off fmxschool.com but took their principle a little more in depth.
Just a few steps and tips for painting your wheels, i was putting some new rubbers on my bike so i figured id jazz it up a lil.

First i took off the wheels and removed the tires.

wash the wheels with soapy water and dry

now depending on what paint you use there are different steps.
I tried 3 brands and put them in order of best/worst IMO
1. xtreme anodized
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.../Picture110.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/btracer02/Picture110.jpg)

2. metalcast
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.../Picture109.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/btracer02/Picture109.jpg)

3. anodizit
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.../Picture108.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/btracer02/Picture108.jpg)

id recoment the xtreme stuff, so thats what ill put instructions for.

after i washed and dried the wheel i sanded it with 400 grit lightly, then rewashed the wheel again.

next tape off the spokes
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.../Picture106.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/btracer02/Picture106.jpg)

and cover the spokes before painting
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.../Picture107.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/btracer02/Picture107.jpg)

spray the recomended xtreme base coat in a thin layer.

next spray a lightcoat of the top coat and let it sit at least 10 minutes before the next coat. Take your time and put on several coats, each spaced out with 10 minutes of drying time. It will pay off in the end. I let the wheels sit for 24 hrs and remounted my tires. I figured a lot of paint would flake off when i mounted my tires up again but surprisingly it held up nice.

heres the end result

Doesn't sound like it would last long, the paint will just get chips in it when ya ride it. U cud buy the proper excel or sm pro rims or get ur rim unlaced, then anondized, then relaced. Or if u want black rims u cud just colour them in with a niko, works out great and dosn't chip if u wanna be a real tight arse and u want to be like grant, lol.

I'm not a tightarse, I just know how to live on a budget ok! :D

That plus unless I bought a whole new pair of wheels already laced ($1400), there is nowhere here that would be able to relace a wheel if their life depended on it.

My 18month old $3.65 black rims will attest to my methods...

Up close it looks a bit rude cause riding through grass and rubbing stuff makes little marks in it, but overall appearance from a distance it's still doing the job. If you're real picky you can keep filling in the scratches after every wash or whatever. Also a line rubs off around the very edges where the tyre compresses around the rim, that never stays there even if it's spraypainted, but it looks kinda cool anyway.

As for Nikko, yeah we call em texta's down here... Haha.

that nikko job came out sick.... did it take long??? and was it hard round the spokes??

GStylEr
7th December 2007, 12:44 AM
It took about 4 hours I think, a larger tipped one would've been wise but I just used what I already had as a cure on a bored, weather poo day. Wasn't any harder around the spokes really, little fiddly but they have those bulges where the nipples go in so it's not that bad.

would powercoat work on rims or would it **** them coz of the heat?

GStylEr
7th December 2007, 01:01 AM
It works fine it's just that you have to pull the wheels apart to get it done and they have to be put back together correctly to be balanced and straight... If you know someone that can lace rims it'll be fine, and you can get em powdercoated any colour you like pretty much. Just gotta be careful changing tyres as it can chip off.

ive just thrown my rims in to be powder coated was really really cheap.. the ones on the kato i was a bit iffy about as they r excel's.. but the cr's were just standard..
powdercoating/sand blasting will not affect the strength of ur rims :)

RM-HARLEY
24th January 2008, 11:19 PM
With the texta wudnt you be able to see where uve gone over twice if u looked at it on the side or in the sun? like i would imagain it would be thicker in some places if u went over the same spot a few times. can u please get close ups. i think this is a good idea. maybe i might do it. cheers grant

GStylEr
25th January 2008, 01:30 AM
Not really, the ink kinda just liquifies on alloy rather than soaking in like paper so it's black regardless of layers, but I found it's pretty hard to get more than 1 layer without the tip just wiping off the old one.

I'm not game to post close ups now since I did mine like 18 months ago and haven't really touched em up for ages hahaha. Have a go on a small patch to see if it works any good and if it doesn't, metho and a rag will sort it... Might be an idea to clean the rims with it first actually so there's nothing stopping the ink sticking. I didn't but I've heard of people having trouble getting it to go on well lol.

black plastics anyone?

KORUPT-FMX
25th March 2008, 11:02 AM
u paint ur rims, they will always chip, unless u 2 pac them, wich they probably still will, ive painted rims a few times with quality paint and lots of clear, they still chip a small amount in the end, and wait till u put them on the tyre machine, also after awhile they tend to kinda loose the shine a little and look like ass, i dont think its worth it.....

Instead of making a new thread ill just ask my questions here.
Will the black anodize on a Excel rim look bad after a while in sand?
Will black Excel rims anodizing hold better then anodizing ur own rims since its Excel?
