450's aren't the best bike to learn on, but it might help to jump in a gear higher than you should be in.
The engine braking might be stuffing you up to, so you'll have to be smooth on the throttle and don't back off. Being in a higher gear wil help this too.
What happened when you stuffed up?

i still cant jump very big yet but i learnt on a 450 and i reckon it was easy as i feel heaps more confident with that extra power to get me outta trouble
but as i said i aint as good as ne1 here but yeh my 2 cents

thanks for the advice guys i tried doing this jump and it was a tabletop style so i was i was just landing on the back wheel i did 5 or 6 times and then i thought i should just go for it so i hit and tried to land on the down ramp front wheel first. it probably looked like front guard first !! i went over the bars and f+*&ked my shoulder and wrist evr since then i have been really sketchy about jumping it.
Should i be excelerating all the way up the take of ramp until the back wheel leaves the ground ??
thanks guys

yer u should but dont go hell slow then just gun it otherwise u might fall of the back, just ride in low revs in a high gear and u will jump it failry smooth and just give it a little bit when ur near the lip of the jump until ur back whee leaves the ground...

Yeah, you want to accelerate smoothly all the way off the up ramp.
With a 450 if you give it a touch too much you will go flying, that's why being in a gear higher might help. It won't accelerate too hard if you give it too much, and it will be a lot smoother.
Also there is probably a how to section here that will show you the right body position to use.

just build up ur jumping slowly. go a bit faster each time u hit the jump. always keep a smooth acceleration off the jump and keeping ur weight centered on the bike.

dad has an aprilia 450, and that was hard to jump for me at first,i found that by greatly exaggerating the stuff i do on my 250, it is easier, i pushed the bike into the bottom of the ramp and moved my hips with it, kinda like a snake, when you get to the top of your ramp, you push your hips foward, and then back, and move you chest foward telling the bike where to go, before it always wanted to go nose or tail high.
in a nutshell dont just ride over it, push the bike where you want to go, and start small

So is jumping a 450 (or yz 426 in my case) much different to hitting ramps on a smaller bike? Im fine with motocross jumping, hitten up louee this weekend gona have a crack at the ramps Posted via iPhone/Mobile/PDA

i wouldn't start out on a 4 stroke, they're too heavy and you can't really time jumps right because there's no powerband.

hahahah guess thats why everyone rides supercross on 2 strokes these days then?

Haha that's why I like ridin a 4 stroke (2 bangas are awesum in there own ways) cos their consistent with power, I jumped mine on the louee ramps last weekend n once I got over the mental block it was pretty easy Posted via iPhone/Mobile/PDA

I dont do very big jumps, only 25ft doubles, but the one thing iv'e learnt is dont let off the throttle at the lip of the jump cause it'll throw the back of the bike up and possibly throw you over the bars.
