yer my mate brought a crf 250x and they sed it was a 05 but it was a 04!!!!
You get the engine number off the bike and then ring up a bike shop (in ur case honda dealer) and tell them the number and they will work it out on there computers, thats wat ive done with all my bikes....

If you turn the steering to one side you'll be able to see a serrial number printed on the frame... now towards the end of the number will be a letter eg. "A" followed by a serries of 0's followed by a number... eg. xx?A0000456... Now the number where i've marked a "?" in the example above is the year model. So for example that number was to be a 5 then your bike would be either a "95" or "05" model. Of wich you will be able to tell the difference quite easily...
Also just for interests sake that number after the 0's is the number it rolled out of the factory so again using the example above that bike would have been the 456th bike built for that year model...
Hope that helps and please if someone knows more or if what i've just preached there is total bullshit please correct me because thats what i've always been taught and if its wrong i'd very much like to know lol :p

Also if the bike still has the stock rims you can check the date of manufacture on them. They have some stuff engraved around them and one of the sets has the month and year of manufacture as the last numbers. For example my bike has 08 03 meaning it was made in August 2003 therefore being an '04 model.
If it has aftermarket rims though that's useless so refer to the frame/engine numbers as above lol. :)

On hondas the 10th number or letter determines the year. Eg 02 will have a 2 as the tenth number. but as i said, before 2000 the tenth digit was actually a letter, heres the listings:
Z = 1979
A = 1980
B = 81
C = 82
D = 83
E = 84
..............
..............
...............
...............
..............
.............
..............
..........
..........
W = 1998
X = 1999
Y = 2000
5 = 2005
6 = 2006
