Just cause I'm so friggin bored, and all I'm doin is researchin shit for my new PC, talkin to Sarah and listenin to her complain about how shit her PC is everytime i mention somethin new I'm gettin lol. I thought i'd pose the question, "just what sort of PC does everyone use to access this wide and wonderfull place we call the net?...
My Stats. at the moment:
CASE: Plain ol' Beige tower 3 x 5 1/4 drive bays 2 x 3 1/2's.
CPU: AMD AthlonXP 1.1gig
MAINBOARD: Gigabyte Socket A GA-7ZM
RAM 1 x 128, 1 x 256 384MB Total
SOUNDCARD: AC'97 onboard.
VID CARD: NVidia GeForce 2 MX400 32mb
MODEM: 56k
CD ROM: 52 x CD/CD-R/CD-RW burner
HD: Seagate 20gig
And thats about all the main pieces. IF the slack ass Australian Post AND the Couriers get their friggin act together and get me my hardware, (they lost my payment for a week, now my hardware has gone missing in action, NOT HAPPY!) I can start building it, it'll have:
CASE: CoolerMaster Centuron 4 x 5 1/4, 4 x 3 1/2
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.2gig
MAINBOARD: Not sure yet.
RAM 1 x 512MB
SOUNDCARD: Whatever the Motherboard has.
VID CARD: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB
MODEM: 56k
CD ROM: 52 x CD/CD-R/CD-RW burner
HD: Seagate 20gig, Seagate 80gig SATA RAID
KEYBOARD CoolerMaster Alloy flat laptop style
PSU ANTEC 350watt smart Blue with 2 blue LED's
EXTRA'S * CoolerMaster CoolDrive 4: Digital HD Cooler, Temperature monitor, Fan speed controler.
*Rectangle side Window Kit
*Blue LED internal Sound reactive Lighting
I WAS gunna bust out and get the new 64bit AMD processor's, but recent articles, thanx to Mungoman58 show that Drivers will be scarce for stock equipment like Printers and scanners and shit, and the 64bit Windows XP wont be available retail and you'll still have to pay for an upgrade if ya ask Microsoft, and not to expect all 32bit programs you have now to run when swapped over to the 64bit system, so all that among a few other things put me off the idea, maybe in another 3-4 years when i wanna update again :D But anywho, thats my rig, which i read today at a whopping 70 degrees celcius, took the side panel off and jammed a pedistal fan infront of it, got it down to 53 :)....Um *cough*, yes, well, lol, probably more mumbo jumbo there than some of you will understand or really care about, but hey, as i said, I'm bored and this kept me busy for a good oh, i dunno 10min LOL.

Sweet, didn't think we'd have many members here that are into modding, or basic modding anyways with custom lights, fans and what not :D, I was originally gunna go with the ANTEC SuperLANBOY for my new case, but decided against the drivebay cover door on the front bezel, What do ya think of it on the WaveMaster Furice?, annoying or what?
furice
14th February 2004, 08:57 PM
well at the moment the doors open, cause ive got the aerogate in that one seeing as the one it should be in is dead with the mb getting replaced(3 months and i aint got it back from em), can be annoying, but its a server machine for me so it doesnt get used that much except for crap being put on it
lanboy is plastic, well the drive bays are, not wat u want in an aluminium case
Mungoman45
14th February 2004, 09:02 PM
Yeah, that was the main reason i didn't want a door on the front covering the bays, cause my CoolDrive will be in there and i didn't wanna have the door swung open all the time to read it. I got bored a while ago and attacked my shitty beige case with the drill and jigsaw and this is what i ended up with lol. believe me, it's not clean inside there with IDE cables and power cords all over the joint, but it's still better than lookin at a plain cream piece of tin. hey crusty a cpu can run at up to 70 degrees with out any trouble but it is best to have it as low as u can get it. be warned some aftermarket heatsinks are dodgy, the stock ones beat them, but Thermaltake or Zalman are the best aftermarket ones, www.pccasegear.com.au is a good place to go for them

yah,i just wanna keep the temp as low as i can so it last longer...dont plan on upgrading anytime soon so... :)
if i encode a big vid & its using almost full power, itll get to about 68 pretty fast...and i really dont wanna leave it on overnight at that temp, so i dont really rip any vids anymore

Nice Cases guys, looks like ya's both usin the same design :D And yes, this is the 1st time I've bothered to check my CPU operating temperature, checked it the other day in the BIOS after i had to reboot after half a days running, and it was sittin at 63 degrees. Today i got some new Benchmark software to play with and the temp was rising, and rising and rising slowly, and it finally got to 69.8 and i thought, bugger this, i dont wanna see how hot it'll get, so, as i said, i opened it up and stuck a pedistal fan in it, just to see how cool i could get it with a lil extra help ;), it's been sittin pretty at 52 even for the last few hours, which is respectable i guess.
PC Case Gear is were I'm gettin all my casing and flashy bits from, but so far they havent impressed me one single bit, they're the ones that lost my money order for a whole week, and if it weren't for me ringing up and enquiring after not recieving a confirmation reciept for my order, it would still be lost. And now that they finally sent off my parts, in 2 seperate shipments mind you, case and window by road, cause they're too heavy for air, and the other shit, obvioulsy by air, and both shipments have mysteriously gone astray, tracking numbers dont even register with the courier mob. It really is sad that where i live is so friggin povo that ya gotta go interstate to get decent parts for anything, and when ya do, it envloves so much friggin around that ya just wanna rip someone's head off.
Anywhooooooooo, enough about my wingin and b!tchin' bout my woes. Where have you guys all got your parts from? PC Case Gear? or somewhere else and have you installed them yourselves, or got someone to do it?
Oh and yes, Poor Mosh's delema with the "40 gig" remark, it seems he, well his mum, got royally ripped off a year or so ago when they perchased their new PC, i wont say how much they paid, cause it's not my place, but it was around what ya'd expect to pay for close to top of the range retail stuff...Turns out, the size of the hard drive they installed was just over 1gig, FAR from the 80 they were suppose to have, so a few weeks after i told Craig to complain, they got a 40gig HD and installed for free, still only half of what should have been in there but. There really are some sneaky lil shits out there these days that take advantage of un-informed people, truly sad.
Good Lord i can ramble on when i want to cant i lol :p.

all my mod stuff i got from case gear, for me they were good, 1 week to get over here in WA, and there cheaper then WA stores, including the shipment so i aint had trouble with them
as for installing myself. i do, cause im qualified to do that stuff
Mungoman45
14th February 2004, 11:21 PM
Ah swish, I'm not "qualified" in the sence, to go messin around with PC Hardware, but i do lol, just with my old PC and junk, but with all my new hardware I'll hopefully be gettin Mungoman422 to do, or guide most of it, as he's accredited in all this shicanery lol ;).
Well i live in QLD and yes, PC Case Gear is cheaper than any of the stores here and have a lot more lil toys aswel, hence why i ordered through them, but the Freight to here cost just over $30, which I'm pissed at, cause I ordered the shit on the 30th of January, and i still havent heard or seen hide nor hair of it which was 2 weeks yesterday, which is truly piss poor for Air Xpress. Think I'd rather pay the extra money just so I know I'll be able to get the shit soon as i pay for it.
Oh well, this shit happens everytime i order or want something, it's always outta stock or they gotta order it and when they do it gets lost or it's broken when it gets here, the list goes on, so it's no surprise this shit happened.

I buy mine from Computer Fairs in Canberra, they have them most weekends and it's cool coz there's heaps of stuff for quite a bit cheaper than elsewhere seeing as though there's so many vendors it's good competition. Then I put it all together myself when I get home. I actually built mine from scratch and most of the others in the house so yeah. Hehe yeah same design, I just grabbed what I could so. A little tip for the guys worried about heat, turn your neons off if it's a problem. I got worried with how hot the air was coming out of mine so I leave the rod off now until it cools down, it does generate quite a lot of heat. :)

Hehe, it's funny how people that dont know all that much about PC's always know the size of their Hard Drive. Speakin of which, I seen the very 1st Terabyte (1000gig) Hard Drive today by Lacie. It a 5.25 size external drive 7200rpm that transfers at a nice 800Mbits/sec. and connects via USB 2.0 or Firewire using plug and play. Check this, it can hold up to 1 year and 9 months of continuous music, 1 month of non-stop MPEG2 Video or 3 days of uncompressed DV video. now THATS some friggin space aye :p

I will not post mine Brad Most would not know what it is.. lol Hahaah !!! and thats my Net Computer.. my Graphic art Computer Forget it.. Im Shaw most would not have even seen some these parts.. lol Here is a lill Look at what I have to do when I build a computer..
The biggest issue in configuring a 3D system is undoubtedly the choice of the graphics display card. For convenience, we will call this an OpenGL card. OpenGL is the standard library of procedures for 3D graphics display, and OpenGL cards are specialized processors (with memory) designed to execute OpenGL functions at lightning speed. All three major professional packages for Windows (Lightwave 3D, Softimage, and 3D Studio MAX) use OpenGL for previewing 3D models and animation. MAX formerly used the HEIDI standard, rather than OpenGL, but MAX 2 moved to OpenGL. All of the OpenGL cards support HEIDI as well, so MAX 1 users have nothing to worry about.
The first line includes those cards that use processors manufactured by 3D Labs. At the bottom of this list are those cards based on the new Permedia 2 processor. This is a revolutionary development--a OpenGL card that costs around $200. At this price, there's simply no reason not to get one. The intended market is clearly users of consumer software, and particularly games. But it does work, though not spectacularly, for 3D development. Eric suggests that the Permedia 2 works best with Lightwave and MAX 1, but struggles with the more demanding OpenGL implementation in MAX 2, and is completely inadequate for use with Softimage. In fact, Eric cautions that the Permedia should not be considered a "full" OpenGL card because the processor is only partially OpenGL compliant. Permedia cards come with 4 or 8 MB of memory. Unlike other 3D Labs solutions, the Permedia has only a single processor to support both display and geometry processing. This integration is apparently the reason for the breakthrough price.
At around $600-$700 (down from the $1,300 I paid last year) are cards based on the 3D Labs' best known processor--the 500TX. Like all 3D labs products above the Permedia, the display is handled by one processor (here the TX) and the geometry by another (the Delta). A typical 500TX-based card includes 16 to 24 MB RAM, mostly DRAM for storing texture maps (bitmaps). VRAM (video RAM) is the more expensive dual-ported RAM used to store the frame buffer--the actual screen display. Above the 500TX is the new 500MX-based card at about $1,400, also with a Delta geometry processor. Eric says that 3D Labs is moving toward a geometry processor called the Gamma, ten times more powerful than the Delta. When the Gamma is released, 3D Labs-based boards will be divided into DMX and GMX classes. The DMX will be an MX with a Delta (just as now), and the GMX will be a very powerful combination of two MX processors and a Gamma geometry processor.
HOW FAST IS IT ALL GOING ??? 2004
In the last few months, Nvidia has released a global assault on the professional workstation video card arena. It was only a matter of time before gaming cards and professional graphic cards became one. When I first started using high end CAD applications like Pro/Engineer it was on a $28,000 Silicon Graphics Indigo 2 running Unix. Today I do most of my work on an over clocked Windows NT Athlon 900 that I paid $2,400 and it is basically 10 times as fast as the SGI. If someone had told me then, that this was to be the future of CAD workstations, I would have laughed....

PMSL, geez Noel, NOW ya know why i didn't bother gettin into anything too indepth, you'll just give the kids nose bleeds from overclocking their brains :p LOL. But yes, i got most of what ya pasted in there, however most people dont need top of the range shit, cuase it's way too expensive for what they use it for, the only way ya'd justify forkin out for something of that calliber would be if you use it all day every day for your job, other than that, 99% of desktop PC users will be more than happy with a $200-$300 vid card that'll do pretty much everything they want it to and probably a bit more ;) Not to mention that more than 3/4 of people buy off the shelf pre-made systems and just get with comes in them.(Pppppfffttttt,....suckers~Homer Simpson:p) There's only a few of us that buy all our parts we want and assemble it ourselves.
Oh, and I notice people sayin their systems are hooked into their stereo's.....mine is also, i just forgot to mention it, hehe, mine runs through a Pioneer Surround sound home theatre system with an extra 4, 12inch subs powered by a 150watt AMP for that deep ground rummbeling, and window shattering bass ;) Think I've had to replace 3 windows in my room so far :p

Ah, nice setup man, clean cut :), Mine at the moment is kinda messy and bare, cause I'm slowly packin everything up, cause we're movin, so the surround speakers are wrapped up sittin on the main ones and lack of posters and wires showing and boxes on the floor and shit, but anywho, Yeah, mines also all wired together through TV, VCR, DVD, PC, AMP, STEREO, Pay TV, Lighting and Switch boxes, (I got 14 speakers in my room, lol) so I guess havin yours hooked up in a similar fassion ya can sympathise with the amount of wiring i have to take down and pack.....

Here's the four one one, His Vidcard fan shat itself and he couldn't afford a new one, or to get it fixed, his solution lay in a nail file, a screwdriver, copious amounts of Mountain Dew, some good ol' grey hundred mile and hour tape and one lonely Friday night in his Dorm room.....and thus brings me to the damning pictorials i like to call:

Hehe, yes, that is true, Although, if ya dont keep up with the times, you shall find yourself BEHIND the times, in a big way, and you'll be stuck with a super heavy paperweight for a PC. I tend to update every 4years or so. Sure enough, you'll have a PC that does the job, but for how long? ya gotta keep in mind, PC hardware size and speed not only doubles every 18 months, but the software for that hardware is also continuely upgrading, and if you fail to keep up with everything, you'll find your PC wont "do the job" for long when you cant get any software that'll run on your PC, not due to lack of compatability, (well sometimes) but pure speed....it just wont be able to hack it and lag till the cows come home.. and that's if it'll even install whatever it is.
Wow, that was more than i originally wanted to write lol, but yes, um, "as long as it gets you where you wanna get and does the job"...
Mungoman58
17th February 2004, 10:42 PM
The doubling of cpu speeds every 18 months is a general rule that has been true in the past although it has been anything but true in the last 18 months for some reason. Apparently cpu speeds are going to take off though again this year from what I've read, about bloody time!

Weeeeell it's time for the Big Steve Machine to be updated and surpassed by a new contender for the grace of my typing presence. I bought an AMD 2600+ not more than 3 months ago I'd say, and as Mungo and Lis would know all to well, it plays up a hell of a lot, but generally due to it's position with not the best cooling in these very hot times. Anyway, dearest mum wanted a new computer because she thought the old AMD K6-2 450 wasn't holding it's own doing her MYOB stuff (And it wasn't PMSL!!!) so like any other loving son, I parted with my AMD2600+ and I feel dirty saying this, went over to the Pentium.
I've only just got it runnin in last 20 mins actually that's how new it is, so figuring out all it's little intricacies but so far, seems to wallop what the AMD.
Old Machine :
AMD2600+
Asus A7V8X Mobo (Has onboard sound and video which is 64bit, so didn't worry about fancy vid card)
256mb DDR Ram
40G HDD
New Machine
P4 2.8Ghz, 800mhz FSB Cpu
ASUS 848P Mobo
512Mb PC3200 DDR RAM (Nice and fast transfer speed on that one)
40G Western Digital HDD (8Mb Cache - I recommend this, most Hard drives have 2Mb cache, this thing will transfer 4 times faster and it shows)
So thats the main pieces on both of them, and I'd say the Pentium is winning at the moment. (NOOOO what am i saying!! hahaha)

Oh WOW, I tried to get one of those from my local computer bloke, but he's sold out, They're just SOOO damn popular, and those lightning fast 20 Mhz they got running these days, it's not hard to see why!!
If anyone's selling one of these please give me a call I'll pay a reasonable $6000, willing to pay more if u have another 2mb Ram

my PC is the biggest heap of shit ya could ever come across...I have to click on a thread and walk away watch some TV and come back for it to load up, thats how slow it is....

17th March 2004, 03:47 PM
hehe, ya could have the fastest PC there is, and STILL have to do that....it's all about connection speed. I got my brand new beast of a PC up and runnin, and it's still slow as all shit online, cause the connection speed i got out here is a whopping 26kbps....just hope we can get Broadband in our new joint that we're movin to in 6 months, we were gunna get it on here, cuase it's cheaper than gettin a second phone line put in, ($210 for a phone line, what a RIP OFF) but sadly, bein out in the middle of nowhere, ya cant get broadband here, so yet again i have to settle with a less than adequate phoneline connection.
Thought I'd chuck in some REAL pics of my new beast lol:
It's bloody hard to get decent pics of lights....especially during the day LOL, one of the PSU Fans :D:

Last one, nice clear day shot (no lighting) of the guts through the window.....It actaully looks messier than it is, cause i took the shot from bellow, which shows all the wiring hiding above. If ya look through the window normally ya cant see any of it, it's nice and neat ;). Got me new blue LED fan today, so that'll be goin in tonight aswel, should look a tad more impressive than those stocko black ones. And also i know the Disk drives in the front look shitty cause their biege. I did ask if anyone knew where to get the Coolermaster alloy Stealth plates, but dont worry, just did a bit more lookin around and found out PC Case Gear have recently started stocking them, and with the help of Mungoman58, i also now am aware that AusPC Market also have em, so as Rove would say "Crises over" HAHA, anywho.,.um, say hi to ya mum for me :p damn influential TV

Keyboard: microsoft natural keyboard
Mainboard: Gigabite titan 8x agp, ddr 400+, 6 channel audio, hyper threading supported
RAM: 1 sim 1024mb DDR PC3200 i think its pc3200?!?!
CPU: PENTIUM 4 3200ghz
Vid Card: GeForce FX 5600XT. 8Xagp 256meg tv in/out. can run 2048 x 1536 @ 32 bit
Extra's GIGABYTE dvd/cd burner 2x hdd 120gig 7200rpm 160gig 7200rpm both seagate. optus uncapped high speed CABLE. $15 speakers

Yeah, LCD is the latest and greatest TV and Monitor technology to hit the market and will outdo anything, and will for quite a while yet, it's just the Price is appauling, give it a few years till they get bigger and prices come WAY down.
Mine has all the flashy lights and windows and junk, cause i bought everything seperatly myself from all around Aus. where ever it was cheapest, and got it built. Mine cost $1300 all up, thats including all new hardware, freight, GST and build cost :D so all up for this machine ya'd probably be lookin at around $2500 easy for off the shelf PC with boring ass case and nothin flash. I just opted on power supplies with LED fans, and Alloy cases and monitoring stuff that made it stand out more, and as ya can tell by the overall price it still shits over stocko retail junk that's almost twice the price and looks 10 times more impressive. I'm not sayin mines the best most impressive PC out there, but when ya compare it to retail shit they try and hock off for twice as much, it deffinatly stands out. I got me new fan installed yesty to :D looks damn nice. I'll chuck in a pic of it at night, although, as many of you modders know, it's hard to take a pic of PC lighting to do it any sort of justice...With this baby hummin along with the 2 blue LED fans in the PSU and my Blue light display of my Cooldrive, my whole room glows a nice light blue at night
Alls i need to complete my lil project is those damn front Stealth Plates for the drives :(

Brad did ya end up with a neon rod or just the fans? I can only imagine the glow comin outta that thing with a rod and those 2 fans running... mmmmm blue...:D Anyone know why my bro's computer would screw up from having too much crap in it? He had one of those fans, and 2 neon rods, and things started going a bit weird one day and it wouldn't boot. Unplugged the rods and away it goes. Perhaps too much daisy-chaining of the power plugs? Schmick comp too:D
Mungoman45
19th March 2004, 01:31 AM
Na, no Neon rods...........yet ;)....You'd be surprised how much light those babies pump out...with 3 Blue LED fans with 3 LED's in each, + the Blue LED's in my Cooldrive fan and display, it makes quite a bit of light :D, as for ya bro's PC dyin with all the stuff in it........i have no idea lol, havent read about it happeneing and havent come across the problem myself yet.....it may be a dodgy wire somewhere shortin' the circuit....i had the same problem when the Firewire connection in the front of my case was connected to the motherboard....it wouldn't even boot...just didn't wanna know about it.

19th March 2004, 01:41 AM
Ah I like that, "yet" hehe. Yeah me bro's only got 1 of those in the side and it lights the whole damn case up pretty well so I can imagine the effect you're getting, must be so pretty, lol. I only got that poo 2 LED green fan I posted, lights up stuff all but meh, maybe one day I'll grab me a blue one :D And yeah, dodgy wire ey, hadn't thought of that for some reason lol, might have a look for that, thanks. I couldn't actually find anywhere on my motherboard to put a firewire connection, and the case only has a pop out plastic hole for a port, wherever the hell I'm supposed to find one of those haha. Oh well the back will do. Should take a stand back pic in the dark when ya get time, see this sexy glow it's throwin:cool:

19th March 2004, 02:04 AM
I like your monitor Pete, it's sexy...it would match my sexy setup :p as I'm still usin my 17inch beige monitor off me old PC in this new rig...gotta wait another month or so till i get me new one for me B-day :)...um, yeah grant, all these lights now a days use Molex connectors for power, and the wire that runs into the pins can somtimes come loose, so maybe check that. And yeah, what brand is your fan your using? cause the higher end ones like Coolermaster, and Antec, which I'm using, have "super bright" Lazer LED's in em ;) much brighter than the others, + they're quiter also.
GStylEr
19th March 2004, 02:31 AM
Um yeah I dunno actually, it came with the case so it's to be expected I guess eh. It says "iC ute" or something on it, can't read it properly cause of the mesh thing in front of it so yeah nothin flash. Hopefully one of those pins is the problem with me IDE cable too and I can get that goin again would be nice... Schweet monitor too Pete, does that keyboard glow? Sure looks like it, very nice indeed...
Mungoman45
19th March 2004, 02:45 AM
Yeah, does it glow Pete...does it hu hu hu? lol. I was tossin up between a glowin keyboard and an Alloy laptop flat style one, which i ended up gettin...the glowin one looked impressive but i wanted an alloy framed one to match my case + it's the same brand as my case, which helped to keep everything in the family
