hey bro if i was you get a two stroke. i have had both four and two stroke and the two strokes are the best. on a cr85 you can get quiet a long way long as you fill it full before you go you should be able to go for ages. And for mixing it hardly costs me nothing. piston and rings can be expensive but you dont need to replace them 4 two years or so. alot of pro riders replace them every 15 hours but thats bullshit you DONT need to. If u got a high porfomance 4 stroke you will be looken at big money all the time to keep the thing runnin. when i had a four stroke it costed me nearly $1000 every year which isnt right. so i got a two stroke and im never goin back.
good luck on your choice bro.

ps. cr85s are great bikes

if you are gonna get a small bore like an 85 you will want to be reebuilding it AT LEAST once a year because you will be riding it harder then you would a 250

haha yeah thats a bit more resonable. i ride my 250 realy hard and it doesnt even need a re build after 1 year and a half. but yeah as ya said for a small two stroke that revs realy high yeah bout one year

a re build is when ya replace things such as piston, rings, and seals. there is other types of re builds but i cant be botherd sayin them. for a re build 4 it depends on ya bore size ( engine size ). for my 250 its costs around $300 for a top end re build.

You are right and wrong... If u get an XR all u need to do is change the oil every 1000km's or more and put fuel in it... you should never need to rebuild an XR in 10 years... but if u get a 4-stroke motocross bike you are in for a big bill...

2-strokes are cheeper to build and you get great performance..
If i were u i would go a YZ125/85 or a CR85...

i agree the xr's a like a tank and you will never kill them. but if you get a newer 4 banger it is going to cost you more in maintance and you will need to ba alot more fussy with changeing oil and filters.

You sound like a complete beginner so I would probably reccomend a CRF230 or a TTR230 to learn on. You will poo yourself with the powerband on a 2 stroke and you need basic mechanic knowledge to make sure they run well. Such as changing the spark plug and stuff.
Most japanese air cooled 4 strokes are bullet proof.
