Hey guys, I'm pretty sure I'm in for a new piston and rings soon, hasn't had any since September '02 when I got the bike hahaha. Anyway what I was wondering I guess is, is it hard or stressful to do? As in I'm really thinkin of taking it to the shop to get it done just so I don't have to worry about it, is it worth the cost? And will they charge me much do ya reckon? I'm not crap at mechanics and such, and my dad is ok too, I've rebuilt my own forks multiple times and stuff like that, but this engine business has me a bit more worried. So thanks for your time and comments everyone.

forsk are hard, especially compared to a topend, im 15 and i have done 3, easy as piss, just follow a manual if in doubt, waste of money taking it to a shop, and yes you do need a top end, power difference is great, especially after more than year:p

I got charged $220 a for labour for a top end rebuild.

But they checked the bottom end, and new parts here and there. They did a maintanence on the bike cause i was to lazy to do it. It cost about another $220 for parts they put into it too.
Take into consideration it was an 80 too.

buy a service manual, and once youve done it once, youll pick it up sooo fast.

theres not much that i wont do on my own bike now, all thru just having a manual, a basic idea of what im doing, and givin it a go :)

after a while youll start to pick up problems before they happen too, once you know all the engine parts

Alright then cool, I might have a go then, should I get a full piston as well or just the rings? Probly better get the whole thing after that much use I spose eh? And I have the manual that came with the bike, the genuine Honda one, that should be enough right? Guess all I gotta do now then is round up some cash, order the stuff and find a convenient time to pull my bike completely apart...;) Thanks for that.

it's so easy... that hardest bit for me was getting the dam barrel of the bottom end... i would do it yourself with a manual

get a piston kit, and gasket kit, dont go genuine, too expensive, it takes about an hour to do and ten mins to run in,

yeah coat the piston, bore and ring in two stroke oil, wont scratch the chrome bore and will smoke when first started, but its for the good of the bike

Ok then cool, goin to Wagga tomorrow, will see if the shop there has one in stock, although I doubt it... But being the Honda dealer you never know I guess. I will do it all in one go, I hate having my bike broken so much so no way I'd leave it apart for a week lol, especially since I ride pretty much every day. The fact that I do nothing all day every day should play in my favour with finding time too haha. Thanks fellas.

it easy to do just take your time and dont rush just make sure you stuff rags into the motor around your con rod so theres no chance of dropping the cir clips that hold the gudgen (sp?) pin in the piston down into the motor good luck

ha ha, thats what i did, two times! first is when the motor shit its self, circlip broke free and fell into the motor and gudgen pin went sides and scored the bore and then i pull it apart and when i was putting the circlip in it feel down again, but then i found out the bottom was ****ed so it did not matter 900 dollars later..... it ripped so fast for an 80.

but what shits me is why they only give you 2 circlips, instead of 3 or 4, so there is always room for error

My God, 52,000 people in that town, and the Honda dealer doesn't have a piston kit in stock... Honestly, that's gotta be bad eh? Well I told em not to order it yet, gonna be $250 and I'm poor, so I'll see what else I can round up first before I throw that much dosh at em. Anyway thanks for the help guys, haha if I ever get it done I'll let yas know how it goes, and be sure to go a bit easier at the ramp I spose!

how often should a front end be re-built?? i have had my bike for a year now, just riding around farm, some trails and a bit of jumping (nothing big yet), and im not sure when to do it. I would have had it done before going to a riding academy, but i didnt end up going, so it didnt happen. So do i more than likely need it done??

guess you mean top ends? its a bit like the question of "how long is a piece of string" really :D

depends what size bike, how often you ride, how hard you ride it, how well its maintained etc etc
