Microsoft ARE closing many of their public chat rooms due to abuse by sick sick, people, namely Peadophiles. They are also going to start monotoring main Australian chatrooms. Microsoft are not closing MSN Messenger, however they ARE closing older versions of Messenger up to but not including v5.

Yes microsoft are closing some of MSNs chatrooms because of sick sick people as brad said. They want everyone to switch to using MSN Messenger. I havent had to many problems with Messenger.

The only beef i have with version 6 is the god damn file transfer. they make this slick lookin interface with shitload more options, yet they neglected to get one of the basic attributes right. Meh, I'm usin "v6-Windows X" though, i may upgrade to 6.1 see if they have fixed anything.

Ok people, here's some OFFICAL info:
"MSN announed on the 24th of September that they are shutting down their chat servers in Europe, Middle East and most of Asia and Latin America on the 14th October 2003. The move comes as abuse of the chat network continues to rise. MSN are changing the way their operators work worldwide.
As the Child Protection charities welcome the move as a "Big step towards protecting new web users".
An MSN Spokesperson remarked:
"We have been concerned about the chat rooms for a while and reached a stage where we were no longer prepared to put up with inappropriate communication."
MSN say that there will be no more free and unmoderated chat rooms on any of MSN's network. MSN say that any such chat rooms will be available only in Japan, America and Canada. MSN says these networks will be moderated 24/7 and will be on a credit card subscription only basis. This will help verify the age and identity of users on the chat network. This obviously means more money for MSN.
Child protection is not the only reason for this move says MSN, but also the minority of spammers who have used the chat network to build mailing lists. This contributes to the growing problem that we all so hate. MSN commented that a small minority of chatters have spoilt the chat for people of all ages.
More information on this drastic move by MSN can be read at BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3133192.stm) and MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.com/news/970970.asp)
Messenger Users:
Please note that it is the MSN chat servers shutting down, not MSN Messenger! Please also ignore the silly rumours being spread about Messenger as it is here to stay.

whats the deal with msn messenger anyway? ive got version 6.0 i believe, yet it keeps telling me that theres a new version of msn available. Its done this before, where ive said ok update. So it does, then like a day later the same thing pops up saying there is a new version when its exactly the same as the one i already have. Is this one of those bugs or am i missing something here.
