FMX riders compete in renovated show design
AURORA, Ill. - Clear Channel Entertainment's Motor Sports division today announced a format change to IFMA Freestyle Motocross (FMX) Presented by XM Satellite Radio effectively immediately. The updated format will continue to include three rounds, but moving forward, the second round will be a freestyle motocross skills competition.
Round one in the revised format will remain the same with all riders competing in a one-minute freestyle qualifier. The top six scores from the first round automatically advance into the finals. The re-vamped round two consists of three individual skills competitions that will be evaluated and scored by a panel of IFMA judges. The skills round may consist of, but is not limited to, the following contests:
Doubles - A team of two riders compete in a one minute synchronized run (two riders have the opportunity to advance).
Stoppie - A front wheelie competition where the competitor who performs the longest stoppie advances.
Final eliminator - A timed competition riders will be judged on how fast the participants can get around the FMX course. Each participant must complete three to four pre-determined tricks during the lap. The fastest time will advance to the finals.
Wheelie - The winner who can do the longest wheelie will advance
Each rider, even those who have advanced to the finals via round one, must participate in the skills competition to compete in the championship round. Up to four additional winners from round two can qualify for the finals. Riders who qualified to compete in the finals in round one, can prevent other riders from advancing by winning one of the three skills competitions. The final round of the FMX competition remains the same with finalists competing in an adrenaline pumping two-minute freestyle run. The last man in the Hot Seat wins the event.
More than 498,000 spectators attended the 2003 IFMA (International Freestyle Motocross Association) Freestyle Motocross Presented by XM Satellite Radio winter series. Averaging close to 22,000 spectators per weekend, the IFMA events show no sign of slowing down. The IFMA held 26 weekends of competition with 57 performances in 2003.
